Its Dogo Onsen Hot Springs is known as the favorite haunt of the protagonist in Soseki Natsume's famous novel, "Botchan." Matsuyama has strong associations with literary giants, and is the home town of such Haiku Masters as Shiki Masaoka and Kyoshi Takahama.
With the towering Matsuyama Castle in the center of the city, Matsuyama flourished as the castle town of the wealthy and powerful Matsudaira samurai clan.
