The
volcanic fumes from Mt. Aso drive home the reality of the sobriquet:
Kumamoto, "Hi no Kuni" - Land of Fire.
The endless expanse of grassland is also "Yu no Sato," or
Birthplace of Springwater; this is where some of the most superb water
is born.
Kumamoto Castle, one of Japan's three greatest, dominates the center
of this castle town, which literary giant Soseki Natsume called "City
in the Wood" because of the lush greenery of the camphor trees.
Mielparque Kumamoto boasts an unparalleled location, about midpoint
between Kumamoto Castle and Suizenji Park, with a view of the Shirakawa
River down below.
